As a result of repairs on my garage/shed, I have brand new light-colored cedar shakes mixed in with very old dark brown cedar shakes. Is there a best way to stain the new shakes so they’ll blend in or closely approximate the dark brown? My cedar is rougher and more rustic than the photo below, but the color contrast is comparable.
Thanks
You would need to strip and brighten all the old shakes first so the dark brown is removed. For the AC stain after this prep, look at Rustic Brown or Black Walnut for a dark brown.
Hi, I have a new IPE wood dock in the Florida sun and was wondering how long can you go between coatings (years) Thanks David
With with exotic hardwoods like IPE wood, you will have to recoat annually. The issue is the extreme density of the IPE, not the stain, that creates this annual reapplication. Just light clean and reapply.
Thanks
Can I mix a little drift wood with the rustic brown to create a unique color?
Yes, you can mix AC colors.
I am looking to put this stain on deck that has what they call ” sun wood ” . It’s a reddish treated wood used for decks. I am curious as to whether or not when I buy a 5 gallon bucket, if I can have it be one that is pre mixed, or am I stuck with having to buy 2-1/2 gallons of each color, and going from there. I was thinking of using the Cedar semi- transparent and mixing it with the chestnut to get a little lighter color in case it might be a little dark. Would that work? Thanks!
We do not custom mix colors. AC colors can be intermixed though on your end.

Sorry, but we are not familiar with Sikkens colors. Please try a few color samples to test.
What is the shelf life of unused portion left in a 5 gal container? Or is it best to re-seal in 1 gal containers? My project is expected to stretch over two years hence the question.
12 months or less with an opened 5 gallon pail. you can try to seal in singles gallons and it should last a little longer. Cannot be stored in a freezing situation.

It will not peel but chlorine can damage a deck stain by “bleaching” out the color. Prices are on the website. For shipping costs, add products to cart and enter your shipping info.
I’m interested in the shine and protection of polyurethane to my new douglas fur deck. After applying the AC transparent Cedar stain can I apply one or more coats of polyurethane?
No. It is a very bad idea to make a deck look shiny or top coat it with a poly. It will blister, peel, attract mold, and will be a nightmare to fix.

Ordering 4 sample colors of semi transparent
I live in New York City and a two year old deck. My deck is exposed to hot summers and snowy winters. My stairs are exposed to the sun year round but the rest of the deck is under an awning.Would you recommend a semi-transparent or a semi-solid for my deck. I am leaning towards a natural wood look but I want to protect my deck as much as possible. Thank you
I read where it you are not suppose to have wood filler in the deck. Unfortunately, I had already filled some holes with wood filler. Any advice on how to proceed with your stain. Also, I’m not sure where my form is that I had order four sample stains. Is there any way I can still get credit for the 5 gallon container.
Hello, there is no way to darken the filler with the AC stains. You could possibly darken the filler with a similar color in a Minwax stain but not sure if that will blend or not.
Fro sample credit, we need an invoice for the sample order.

I have a wood deck (pressure treated pine, about 3 years old, unstained/unpainted) and I had an addition installed (new wood, pressure treated pine, almost 2 1/2 month ago). Should I be using the semi-solid or can I use a semi transparent? I noticed the semi-solid indicates that it not be used for 1 year old or less. Thank you
Semi-trans as the semi-solid has to be 1 year. Clean and brighten all the wood for the prep with the Restore a Deck Cleaning Kit.

Can you recommend the number of gallons it should take to cover this area using 2 coats of your semi-transparent stain?
Does the 2700 sq. feet cover both sides? You will need about 20-25 gallons for the two coats and 2700 sq. feet.

Redwood tone has UV protection. For even more protection from UV, use the Sierra Redwood.
Hi, I wanted to make sure that the oxford brown stain is appropriate for an IPE deck. Does it need a sealer after the stain?
The Oxford Brown is not for IPE. Use the Amber, Mahogany, or Black Walnut.
You cannot apply a sealer over a deck stain nor is there a need. The AC is a sealer as well.

The RAD prep is better for the wood and is a better prep overall.

All of the AC colors are tinted and will enhance the grain based on the color you would like. The Natural is the lightest tint and is similar to a wet look.

The BM Arbocoat does not remove well with a stain stripper so sanding is most likel needed. After the sanding, continue the prep with the Restore A Deck Kit. This should do it for the prep.
Thank you for the response.
I have heard sanding is almost required with the BM stuff. So process should go sand, cleaner, brightener, AC stain….correct?
thanks again
That is correct!
Thanks for the quick responses…one last question though.
I have read belt sanding along the grain of the wood is best to sand the cedar deck…would you go to an 80 grit paper to really get this old BM stain out? Thanks again!
60 to 80 grit.

I don’t know what it was, but haven’t found any other dark brown deck stain for ipe beside yours. I could not find a black walnut for hardwoods in the samples. There was only a semi transparent black walnut available. Thank you,
It is the same. There is only one version of Black Walnut. It is color designed for hardwoods but can be sued on all wood types as well.
