The BM Arbocoat does not remove well with a stain stripper so sanding is most likel needed. After the sanding, continue the prep with the Restore A Deck Kit. This should do it for the prep.
Thank you for the response.
I have heard sanding is almost required with the BM stuff. So process should go sand, cleaner, brightener, AC stain….correct?
thanks again
That is correct!
Hi…
I have a 2 year old cedar deck that I stained after a few months with Benjamin Moore Arborcoat semi-transparent stain…it is junk and started to peel after the first winter. I waited another winter to get as much of it off as possible “naturally”, but need to do the staining again this year.
I have heard odd things about AC and will try the “Cedar” semi-transparent, or Amber (will get some samples though).
I live in Vancouver, BC so we get a fair amount of rain, and possible snow.
My question is what is recommended approach to get this horrible BM product off the deck, and prep it so I can stain with the AC product this season? I have a big flat (2×6”) cedar deck with a one step (along the entire edge) going down to the lawn. No railings to worry about.
Many thanks!
The AC stains are all penetrating oil based stains that do not peel. Any color that you like will work. Prep with the Restore A Deck Kit first.

Now I would like to also receive a sample of Natural as the guy doing my deck think Oxford Brown may be too dark and he would need to lighten it up by blending in some natural color.
We do not have a sample order from you. Please add to cart the colors that you would like.
Thanks
I ordered a sample of the woodland brown and the rustic brown. I do not like the look of semi-transparents and the woodland brown came out looking way too orangish. I am looking for something more reddish in a semi-solid. Would you recommend trying a sample of the Mountain Cedar or the Sequoia if I am looking for a brown with reddish tones?
Thanks.
Sequoia would be closest to what you are looking for.

I have washed teh deck down with a cleaner and a pressure washer. Can I apply a semi-solid stain over top?
Sorry but that is not possible. The old coating must be removed if you to want to use a semi-transparent.

You recommend Amber versus Natural Tone Transparent because, I assume, natural tone transparent is not properly formulated for exotic hardwoods? By the way, I live in Michigan and my deck is covered but will get sun.
You can use any of the colors of AC on Tigerwood. The Amber was designed though to give a little better UV protection.

If I cannot find a single color that I like, can I blend semi-transparent colors with semi-solid colors? Of course, blending the two types will change both the color and grain appearance. Can natural be blended with both types? Thanks!
Yes you can mix the AC colors together for a custom color.

Amber is a semi-transparent. Verticals will last about 3-5 years depending on the exposure to the UV.

It had a solid or semi solid stain previous. I’m restoring it and have cleaned, stripped, pressure washed and brightened so far. Im about to countersink some of the nails and sand. Your stain was recommended but I don’t see a color I like. I was hoping for something cedarish with some red in it. I’m assuming as old as my wood is most any color will turn out darker than what you show. Any color recommendations for my type of deck? I’d like to go with a semi transparent stain. If I buy a 5 gallon bucket and don’t use it all how long of a shelf life will the leftovers have? Could I mix colors?
Yes you can mix colors with the AC stains. Shelf life of an opened 5 gallon pail is about 12 months or less. Possiblly longer, but depends on how well you store it.

Please tell me how well Armstong Clark works in this are of the USA? Can you share pros and cons with me? As well as using an airless sprayer to apply your product.
The AC can be sprayed, but you will need to back brush to ensure it is evenly applied. Typically lasts about 2 to 3 years for most deck surfaces. The semi-solid colors would give the longest life in your environment.

I would like the natural red/orange color of the wood to be preserved. Would the Natural Tone stain be best to preserve the natural color? Does the Cedar Tone or Redwood Tone stains artificially color the wood?
All the colors will enhance the grain of the wood including the Natural Tone. They do not “artificially” color the wood, but enhance based on the color you choose.
I like the Woodland Brown shade, but would like only 40% of that shade. Would it be possible to do that. If so, could I get it as a sample? What I would like to do is use Amber on the floor and the 40% Woodland Brown on the sides of the deck to create a 2-tone effect. I do want some samples but would like to know if what I asked is possible. Thanks. ;-)
Sorry but we do not custom mix. You can mix yourself together two colors to achieve a custom color. Adding Natural into many of the colors would lighten them respectively.

I received the samples and the Mountain Cedar is a very “orangish” color resembling the Cedar or Redwood? The picture of the sample on the website shows a much darker…greenish tone which is what I was after. I realize that the pictures may be somewhat different than the actual, but this is an extreme difference.
the MC is a tannish cedar color. There is no “green” in it.
Do the natural and cedar tones block UV light?
Yes, but they offer the lowest amount of UV protection. Pigment and color is directly related to the UV protection. The darker colors or stains with more pigment will always last longer from sun fading.

We built one side on to an existing fence and I need to try and match that color, would you know of a semi transparent that would match up or close to a micro sienna brown wood.
