Best Stain for an Ipe or Mahogany Deck with Armstrong Clark Hardwood Finish.
Not many exotic hardwoods offer the color or stunning grain pattern of mahogany. A mahogany deck makes a simple outdoor living space an object of interest and beauty. Even though mahogany is naturally resistant to rot, it still requires a water repellent finish to ward off the harmful effects of Mother Nature.
A mahogany deck does seem to hold stain more evenly than other exotics. However, the key is to use the best stain for a mahogany deck, otherwise, you risk jeopardizing the wood’s appearance. Stay away from stains that form a film on the surface. These film-forming stains fail to protect dense hardwood. They are prone to wearing and peeling.
Armstrong Clark IPE Deck Stain
The best stain for a mahogany deck is one that deeply penetrates the wood’s surface. A stain like Armstrong Clark is specifically designed for exotic hardwoods like mahogany. It is formulated to soak into the wood’s dense pores to help condition and shield against weathering. The heavily bodied oils natural resist moisture and block out harmful UV rays. Armstrong deck stain holds color longer on exotic woods than any other stain on the market.
In addition to excellent water repellency and protection, Armstrong oil based stain comes in a semi-transparent mahogany color. This wonderfully enhances the natural look of mahogany making it a thing of beauty. Armstrong mahogany color deck stain will enrich your deck’s appearance and provide long-lasting protection. There is no other way to better protect the investment of a mahogany deck.
Your best bang for your buck when it comes to weather guarding your mahogany deck is applying Armstrong stain in their new mahogany color. It conditions the wood, locks out moisture, and ensures your mahogany deck will give you years of enjoyment and added value.
one more question…..do you have any dealers in the RI or Ma areas..thanks, steve
We do not but can ship to you from our website.
I have a 16×20 15 year old mahogany deck and i’ve stained it 4 to 5 times with behr products.
what stain and color should I use to bring back its color and also last longer than 1-2 years. thanks, steve
Make sure to remove the Behr fully first. Stain with the AC in the Mahogany color.
what do you mean by AC in the mahogany color??
Many of your competitors’ products advertise the % UV protection. What is the % UV on your product?
% is based on solid content, not UV protection. The AC is close to 60-70% solids.
If you are using Ipe as a wood siding, is there any need to stain the interior portion of the wood?
Are there any dealers in the Tampa or Orlando area?
In hot and humid Florida conditions, what would the recommendations for the reapplication of the stain? Would I possibly have to reapply in less than a year? I have west sun exposure.
For the restore-a-deck clean & brighten, do you have to have a dry 2 days in between its application and applying the stain or just ensure that it is dry at the time of application? I am concerned that it would rain sometime in most 48 hour periods here.

It will help but it is not possible for the new wood and older wood to match exactly. Darker colors will help to blend better.

Should I use the semi-transparent stain for hardwood?
Since it is upside down will it penetrate adequately?

You will need to prep first with the Restore A Deck Kits. The Hardwood colors will be the correct product to use. It will soak in but watch for drips during application.

Hello, this does depend on the current condition. Is there a stain or just dirt and grime? If the latter, use the Restore A Deck Kit.

The Armstrong is a penetrating stain so now it does not peel. Make sure prep first. Thanks!

My problem is where the fence will be, they will get wet daily from the sprinkler system. I won’t want to put up the fence and let it sit for a month with the sprinkler hitting it. Hello,
New wood needs to weather outside after being built for 3 months and then cleaned and brightened for the prep. Thanks.

Best to remove the IPE Oil fully so use the stripper.

Just the exposed wood needs to be stained. Install, wait a month, prep with the Restore A deck Kit, and apply one coat only.
Would this be the proper stain to coat new tongue and groove 1×4″ covered front porch, would you recommend coating all sides before installation?
The product we have is Blue Star 100% certified Malaysian Hardwood tongue and groove 1×4″ x8′ boards, we are replacing existing mahogany tongue and groove floor on the porch

Yes use the AC in either the Amber or the Mahogany for very dense wood. Apply one coat but do not back wipe.
I have green heart wood I salvaged and started to make handrails out of. Someone suggested your product as a good preservative. Any experience or suggestions with this wood?
It is naturally rot resistant and very dense and light in color but I was told it is in the IPE family.

We have never had any issues with rubber roofs but that is more of a question for your roof manufacturer then us. If they say no oils then we would not advise it.

Finally, if I order online, will it be at my house in 2-3 days? Or does it ship out in that time?
Thanks!

Wait a month then oil it. Amber shows all the grain but is tinted. Yes it works on Teak. Shipping time depends on where you live.

If I only want to darken the color, not change it, should I use Hardwood Amber Stain? Also, is there any compatibility issue going over old formula Cabot ATO?
Thanks for letting me know.
When switching brands you will need to remove the old coatings first. Use our stain stripper and pressure wash off. You can use the AC Amber. IPE will require a new application annually of the stain.

AC fades lightly on IPE. In most scenarios it will last the season and will need to be reapplied annually on IPE.
New Ipe deck going in- not wanting to do a ‘reddish’ tint, like your Mahogany color. I’m guessing that your Amber will basically darken the natural Ipe color?
I’m assuming deck can be stained as soon as weather allows?
Also, any advantage to pre-treating all 4 sides of the Ipe before installation?
Amber darkens similar to as if wet with water. No need or advantage to staining all sides. The Ipe should season for a few months then prepped first with the Ipe Cleaner before staining.
