Best Stain for an Ipe or Mahogany Deck with Armstrong Clark Hardwood Finish.
Not many exotic hardwoods offer the color or stunning grain pattern of mahogany. A mahogany deck makes a simple outdoor living space an object of interest and beauty. Even though mahogany is naturally resistant to rot, it still requires a water repellent finish to ward off the harmful effects of Mother Nature.
A mahogany deck does seem to hold stain more evenly than other exotics. However, the key is to use the best stain for a mahogany deck, otherwise, you risk jeopardizing the wood’s appearance. Stay away from stains that form a film on the surface. These film-forming stains fail to protect dense hardwood. They are prone to wearing and peeling.
Armstrong Clark IPE Deck Stain
The best stain for a mahogany deck is one that deeply penetrates the wood’s surface. A stain like Armstrong Clark is specifically designed for exotic hardwoods like mahogany. It is formulated to soak into the wood’s dense pores to help condition and shield against weathering. The heavily bodied oils natural resist moisture and block out harmful UV rays. Armstrong deck stain holds color longer on exotic woods than any other stain on the market.
In addition to excellent water repellency and protection, Armstrong oil based stain comes in a semi-transparent mahogany color. This wonderfully enhances the natural look of mahogany making it a thing of beauty. Armstrong mahogany color deck stain will enrich your deck’s appearance and provide long-lasting protection. There is no other way to better protect the investment of a mahogany deck.
Your best bang for your buck when it comes to weather guarding your mahogany deck is applying Armstrong stain in their new mahogany color. It conditions the wood, locks out moisture, and ensures your mahogany deck will give you years of enjoyment and added value.
We have a brand new Ipe deck. Do you have more photos of Ipe with Black Walnut stain? We’re in ithe PNW. Do we wait until spring to stain it for the first time? My contractor wants to oil it soon. Thank you!
You cannot stain new wood right away:

I have a mahogany deck that hasn’t been treated for some years, and the home owners like the weathered color. Is there a stain to keep the color or even tint it more of a gray? Something that isn’t acrylic or latex and the mahogany will absorb? thanks
No, and you have to remove the great weathered look first when applying a stain.
what is Ipe?
Exotic hardwood.
We finished staining our ipe deck w/ Armstrong’s Amber three days ago, but couldn’t tell until today when it dried, that it’s very thin and uneven and needs a second coat. We’ve been walking on it lightly since. Can we stain again now? Anything we need to do first? Thnx.
You can apply a light second coat now. Make sure you do not over apply.

Have Armstrong Clark Mahogany on an Ipe deck built over a rubber roofed living space. It’s time to refinish but I’d like to know if your Restore-A-Deck kit is safe to use without damaging the rubber roofing (which can’t be covered up since the deck stringers sit directly on the rubber).
It should not harm the roof.
What are the steps to refinish a 7 year old mahogany deck that has grayed

Stain with one coat of one of the AC hardwood colors: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/wood-and-decking-stains/hardwood-and-ipe-stain
Live in central Mass. new mahogany deck to be installed Sept,- Oct. I plan to let season until spring then stain with AC IPE. I used said stain on adjacent deck last year and am very happy. I would like to reapply on that deck in spring. Do I need preps?
Yes, you need to prep both with the Restore A Deck Kit.
HiI have a mahogany deck 10 years old that has previously been sealed ….7 years ag… with Prnofin. What’s the best sealer to use at this point in time? Yesterday, I power washed the deck after I cleaned it with Jomax and bleach. Looks nice and clean. Can I use any type of stain given the previous Penifin application.
Would Appreciate your professional opinion. Thanks Dan
You can stain now with one of the AC hardwood colors as long as your wood is clean and free of the Penofin Stain: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/wood-and-decking-stains/hardwood-and-ipe-stain
Thanks
Which stain color is that ? It looks too dark for mohagany
Most likley Black Walnut
Mahogany but put on thick .with brush then wiped it down with rags /towels on feet ?. It lighten up but still looks fantastic! Gunna clean and freshen up with another coat before this winter .
buy this stuff ! Best I’ve used yet !
Hope these pictures post
First time using your product. I’m very happy with the coverage and color . Got lucky when I sanded my mahogany porch with 80 grit and didn’t use any other grit although I had them . It really opened up boards to allow for product to penetrate! Thanks. Follow directions on can .
We have a Cumaru deck that was originally stained (about 9 years ago) with Penofin Rosewood. (See photos). We want to restain it with AC Mahogany. We have cleaned part of the deck with Oxyclean. We also have some spots from where a bleach cleanser spilled during a house wash. Should we continue with the Oxyclean and then apply the AC stain? Any suggestions about the bleach spots? The deck and railings measure about 630 sf. Do you think two gallons will do the job? Thanks!
Use this kit for proper prep while pressure washing the deck.
Which kit? The Clean and Brighten or the Strip and Brighten?
Sorry, this kit: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-kit
What about the bleach spots? Do you think this kit will help those?
Yes, it should help to even it all out.
Is the hardwood (mahogany) deck stain recommended for UV protection on new IPE outdoor furniture? Can we apply the stain immediately on the new wood or should we wait a few months before applying the stain? We are trying to minimize the graying. Appreciate your assistance.
The AC stains are not suggested for furniture. You cannot stain new wood right away: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
I will say I use the mahogany stain on my ipe-and-steel furniture and it works fine. I treat the wood furniture like decking: clean and brighten it with restore-a-deck and then stain.
Did you wait 3-4 months before applying first coat of stain? We want to minimize the amount of graying. Thanks
You have to wait and prep. No way around this: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
I waited a year before prep and staining. It doesn’t go gray immediately even if not stained.
Is there anything to do for ipe that seems discolored from moss or mold before staining? This sofa normally has cushions on it and where they had moss is the lighter spots in the bend/seat of the sofa. They’ll be covered by the cushions later so not a big deal, but I thought I’d check. The sofa has just been cleaned and brightened with restore-a-deck but the spots remained.
You should be okay to stain this.
Does the IPE stain work better on drier wood? I’ve cleaned and brightened the wood and the day I stain there will have been no rain for 24 hours and no rain expected for 12 hours after, but it’s still quite damp and humid out, the wood won’t be as dry as it could be. My other option is wait a week and hope for a longer stretch of drier weather, which I will do if it means more lasting results.
You cannot apply the AC to damp wood. You need at least 48 hours after prep, maybe longer.
48+ hours dry time? Will do.
Three years ago I used the AC amber hardwood stain on my Cumaru deck. I would like to change the color to mahogany. Do I need to clean, strip, and brighten?
Strip and brighten.
I have a deck built of Jarrah timbers. It is facing due West and some areas at the front of the deck have lost almost all the previous stain which was a semi-solid. Is the IPE deck stain the best choice for this wood? Or is there something else you would recommend? Also – since there are large areas in the most sun exposed section that are almost bare and other areas that still retain a lot of the previous stain, would you recommend sanding to remove the previous stain ? I know you say not to sand, but this instance seems like it might be necessary. Thanks for your opinion and guidance.
Yes, remove all the previous coating by stripping and or sanding. Use one of the AC 3 hardwood colors.
This is my mahogany deck after I spent yesterday stripping, power washing, and then brightening. I can definitely tell the old mahogany red stain is gone, at least mostly, but I can’t tell if it’s supposed to look uneven like this. Would the unevenness in color tone show if I start staining, or should I try to strip a second time until I get a uniform natural wood color everywhere?
Does it look even when wet with water? If not, give it another strip and brighten.
I have a old mahogany deck. I power washed it, now sanding it with a 80 grit sand paper because its rough from the power washer.Next I’ll use a leaf blower to get most of the dust off. then I’ll use a deck cleaner then a brighter.Going to use a lambs wool pad to apply the stain.I still have a lot of work left to do to get ready for the stain but wondering how long it will take to receive the 5 gallon stain in the mail to Boston Massachusetts?Any other tips on refinishing the deck?
3-4 business days to arrive. Lambs wool does not work that well. Try a stain pad or brush.
Thanks for the information about receiving your product. I’ll be ordering it soon. Also thanks about the information about the lambs wool I’ll get a stain pad.Its hard to measure this deck but do you think 5 gallons of stain will be enough?
Hard to say. Should be if that is all the wood.
Plus the pool landing and steps.i think I’ll get a extra gallon just to be sure I have enough.
Been raining a lot here and haven’t had a chance to stain the deck. What the best way to mix up a 5 gallon container of stain?
Use a paddle mixer that fits on your drill. They are about $5 from local hardware stores.
Finally have 2 beautiful days to put the stain on the deck. I had poop dropping on the deck so I washed it then dryed it with a hair dryer.Stain was still there so I sanded the spots now it a lighter shade where I sanded compared to the other pieces of wood is it going to effect the stain? Will it blend it or will I noticed where I sanded.Thank you
Spot sanding can lead to the stain looking blotchy in those areas.
if I used a brighter in those areas than used a hair dryer to dry it. could I still apply the deck stain tomorrow? FREAKIN BIRDS!
You cannot spot apply brightener to even out the sanding spots. It will stain lighter no matter what in any areas that you power sanded. Only natural weathering for a few months and a full re prep would even out the porosity of the wood so it stains evenly.
Thank you for replying so quickly to my questions. I appreciate it.
NP!
I have a mahogany deck that has been stained three years ago with Benjamin Moore Arborcoar. I’d like to switch to AC.
Send some pictures.
Here are some shots of the deck.
Do not sand. Just strip and brighten for the prep. https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper
Thank you! I’m glad I asked 🙂
One point of clarification: when you say “Do not sand”, is it because it’s unnecessary (to get a smooth wood feel), or is it because sanding can do more damage than good?
Sanding can reduce stain penetration. We do not suggest it unless needed to remove old coatings that cannot be stripped or to help with severely rough/splintered decks. If you sand, use no more than 60-80 grit and use the Brightener after.
And another (only one posted earlier).
Have mahogany decks – front porch, wrap around and the main deck (18 yrs old). I used a semi-solid stain once (bad decision), it peeled and was a PIA to clean off. Prior to and post to the semi-solid stain, I used Cabots Australian Timber Oil. Recent formulation of Cabots oil product is water soluble. Looking for a true oil based product (amber tint) that stands up to use for 3+yrs. 1100 sqft of deck surface – lots of work. Thank you
AC is oil based.
Is it a solid stain or a penetrating/preserving oil based product? thank you
AC does not come in a solid stain. The hardwood colors are semi-transparent.
OK. I am now ready to restore this deck. Just finished replacing mahogany railing with Intex railing system as well as replacing all skirt wood with Vesatex. Please let me know what I need for a full restoration for 1200sq’ mahogany decking. Amber color. Thank you

2 Kits. About 5 gallons of stain will cover the entire hardwood deck.
Just stripped, brightened and stained my deck last year with Armstrong products. Want to stain again this spring. Do I need to strip and brighten again or can I just stain?
Clean and then brighten for prep: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-kit
Is it necessary to seal as a second step after using the Armstrong Clar
No, you can never apply a sealer over a deck stain.
Ok, thanks …what would your opinion be on a product that is a stain and seal in one ? I have louvered Mahogany Shutters throughout each window of our home…
All exterior deck and wood stains are sealers as well. They are never two different products that require both.
We sanded down the front porch of our 100-plus year old house and found beautiful mahogany. The porch is covered but gets wet. What is the best approach to stain/seal? Thanks!

Similar to the previous question about a mahogany deck that was installed about 9 months ago. Prior to your treatment and stain suggestions, what sanding grit do you recommend to eliminate most of the splinter issues that this deck has ?
60-80 and then clean and brighten.
Why do you have to clean and brighten after sanding? I just spent the entire day sanding our mahogany decking with 40 and 80 grit using a palm sander. Why would I need to clean and brighten? I was planning on staining tomorrow.
You use the prep products to open the pores of the wood after sanding so the stain can absorb in better.
One more question…We used your stain on our back deck this summer and love it. One thing that attracted me to your product is that we won’t have to do all the prep work to recoat when the stain begins to wear off or fade. Now we are doing the front deck which is mahogany. I have a can of TWP which is highly recommended but I see in their instructions that before recoat, we would have to go through this entire prep thing again (sanding, and then applying 1/2 bleach 1/2 water). Why is it that your stain for mahogany will not require all of the prep before re-coating? What makes your product different?
You always have to prep when recoating with a deck cleaner and a wood brightener. You do not need to sand or strip.
I have a new mahogany deck that was installed about 9 months ago but hasn’t been treated with any stain or other product. What is the best approach for preparing the deck? Also, I am assuming that the mahogany color will provide the most natural looking color for mahogany, correct? Lastly, 1 coat of stain or two?
Prep with this kit: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-kit
One coat of stain. As for color, Amber is the lightest and looks like a wet look, Mahogany is redder, and Black Walnut is much darker brown.
do you need to brighten wood if you sand deck bare
Yes, that helps the stain to soak in better.
where do you buy it
You can buy directly from our website and have it shipped.

We stained our mahogany deck two years ago with Benjamin Moore Arborcoat, a Tung oil and petroleum distillates based semi translucent stain. How do we prepare the surface before applying Armstrong do you recommend cleaning and/or sanding?
You will need to strip and brighten for prep: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper
The wood is smooth, is sanding recommended or just strip and brighten
Only sand if you cannot fully strip off the BM. Do you have a picture?
Here’s how it looks before any prep
Probably strip and brighten for prep is only needed with sanding.
What is the best way to apply the Armstrong stain?
Stain pad or brush. https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/armstrong-clark-staining-instructions
I have a 10 year old mahogany floor on an enclose d screened in porch. I believe it was originally sealed with some type of polyurethane finish since it originally had a shine to it. I sanded the entire floor with 80 grit sand paper and got all the old stains and finish off. It came up beautifully after sanding. I then hand brushed the AC deck stain for hardwoods(mahogany color) on the floor, board by board. The floor is 170 square feet. I used a fraction of the gallon can. Applied it sparingly and let dry for 24 hours. There were a few wet spots after the 24 hours. Wiped all of the wet spots and the entire floor. Waited another 12 hours to dry. I am still getting stain color on the rag even though the floor looks dry. Now what do I do?
Try wiping the excess stain off with mineral spirits and rags. Saturate any oil rags in water and lay flat to dry outside.
Applied mineral spirits and wiped off with rags per your instructions. Needed to do this twice but it solved the problem. The floor (14 ft by 12 ft) is inside a screened porch, mostly covered by an 8ft by 10ft indoor/outdoor carpet from June through September. The remainder of the year the floor is bare through the winter (Philadelphia area). What do you recommend each spring for cleaning and maintenance going forward to avoid sanding? Thank you!
Warm water with some dish soap to clean off dirt.
Why soak the rags and then lay out to dry? Is this so they are safe to wash? Thanks.
So there is not a chance of spontaneous combustion and a fire.
Oh, geez. Good thing I did that. Thanks!
I have a 20 year old Mahogany deck power washed and sanded (11×35), and a new adjacent Mahogany deck (22×16), pictures attached. How would you recommend matching the color of the 2. In looking at the pictures and discussions here, Amber is a frequently recommended color. How much stain would you recommend purchasing, assuming 1 coat? The pictures are: new deck, old deck, and a picture where they are next to each other.
See here about new wood: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
After waiting a few months, clean and brighten all wood. one 5-gallon pail should cover all wood for the one coated needed.
Thank you for the link. What color would you recommend to match the older deck with the newer one? Would you recommend sealing the wood with some type of varnish after staining? What product do you have for that?
Thank you!
You cannot match new and old wood exactly, the older wood will be darker. Try Amber. You can never top coat over the AC, it will peel.
I have a new mahogany (never been sealed) porch and I would like to simply enrich and prolong the natural color which product should I use? Thank you
Try Amber.
Is this available in retail stores? Haven’t been able to locate via Google. Thanks!
Online only.
How long does it take to ship to MA and at what cost for a gallon?
Cost is here: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/wood-and-decking-stains/hardwood-and-ipe-stain
shipping varies based on timing.
Hello!
We have a Mahogany deck that is about a year old. It Hasn’t yet been treated with anything. I am planning to purchase your deck stain and restore kit for prep. My question is….the deck currently is horrible with splinters! You can’t sit on a step without slivers ending up in your pants never mind walking across it! Is this normal for mahogany? Does staining help to fix this or should the deck be sanded down?
Sand it first and then prep.
We have sanded the deck started with 80 and finished with 100 grit. I’m hoping this was right or did I “over sand”? Do I need to now wait 3-4 weeks for the pores to reopen to do the staining as well as the “prep kit”? (I saw this as an answer to someone else’s question.) Thank you!!
You did over sand, wait, and prep. 2-4 weeks.
I have a mahogany front door that I have stripped, sanded and have it prepared to stain. I would like to stay away from any type of finish that builds up a coating on the surface of the wood. Stripping and removing the original finish was quite the chore that I do not ever want to have to do again. Would your stain be suitable for using on my door? If so, what would I need to do in order to “refresh” the finish after a couple of years when it starts to show some wear? Thanks!
Sorry but no, the AC is not designed for doors.
I have a large mahogany deck. 2/3 of the deck is brand new and the last section is existing. I’d like to use the amber color, do you think both sides will blend or will there be a drastic difference in appearance?
See here about new wood: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
It will not blend perfectly the first time staining. It should in a year or two when you redo.
what does IPE mean. Steve w
IPE is a type of wood.
I have 2 mahogany decks that are 20 years old. I’ve power washed and need to restrain both decks. I’m not sanding down to the bare wood so I’d like a nice stain that will bring back the light FW of the mahogany. What should I get?
Try the Amber color.
transparent or semi for this older previously stained mahogany deck
Thanks! I ordered a couple of samples, waiting for them to ship.
I have just finished building a deck with new mahogany 1 x 4’s. I would like to have the weathered gray look eventually but also protect the mahogany from staining and cracking. Do you make a protective finish that will allow the UV in so it weathers?
Sorry but no.
No, all our stains have color in them and will prevent UV graying.
Outstanding results using the Amber stain on my mahogany deck. Easy to use and beautiful results. Before and After pics
Looks great!
Hello, I have quite a bit of leftover AC stain from my redwood deck. It is Natural Oak, semi transparent. I was hoping to use it on my IPE wood dock. I am at high altitude (7500 ft) in VERY dry New Mexico. I have already cleaned and brightened with RAD products. What will be the problem with using the Oak stain over the specialized IPE stain you list. I am a bit frustrated as on your site says “no new orders” I am worried about waiting too long to stain the dock.
Thanks!!
Natural Oak is not designed for IPE. While it will work. It will fade a little faster than the 3 IPE stain colors.
Hi – just doing the math. Our deck is approximately 575 sq feet. (including steps). It’s two tiers top – 12’4″ x 18’4″ bottom – 14’2″ x 23’5″. Your description reads the hardwood stain covers 300+ sq feet per gallon, so 2 gallons should be plenty. But, when we put the numbers in the calculator on your site it’s saying we need 12 gallons! I feel like that can’t be right. Can you please clarify? Thanks!
You have to add in all the ratings and stairs, not just the floor sq footage. What is the total sq footage with all added?
Railings are PVC and I included the stairs in the overall 575 sq ft. There are 3 that are 7’9″x2′ and 3 more that are 1’x3′. Definitely not nearly enough to put us up to 12 gallons! I just want to make sure I buy enough without overbuying. Thanks.
Your floors alone added up to 565 for me. Add in the stairs and you are at 600ish. Do you have outside edges of the floors that are wood? If so you have to add that as well.
What type of wood is this? The coverage of 300 per gallon is for a hardwood deck only and 1 coat. If you do not have a hardwood deck then you will need much more and you will need two coats.
Hardwood, mahogany. We have PVC around edges as well. So what would you recommend? 3 – 5 gallons?
Yes, somewhere between 3-5 should work.
I should add I really like a reddish hue. You can see a small spot on the left that still holds some of the color from the last time it was finished.
Hi – We have a large mahogany deck that we pressure washed last week. We’re waiting for a good stretch of weather to apply the stain. I am between the amber and mahogany colors. I saw someone posted pics of a finished deck in the amber stain below and it looks great. Do you have any pics of the mahogany color that you can post? This is our deck now, just power washed, waiting on decision for stain! Thank you.
Look at our photo album: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/armstrong-clark-photo-album
Thank you, that’s exactly what I am looking for.
Hi
i have a brand new mahogany deck. Do you recommend using this product right away? I would like a stain/treatment that preserves the original beauty of the wood.
