Armstrong Clark Oil Based Wood Deck Stains

Best Stain for a Ipe or Mahogany Deck

by Administrator

Best Stain for an Ipe or Mahogany Deck with Armstrong Clark Hardwood Finish.

Not many exotic hardwoods offer the color or stunning grain pattern of mahogany. A mahogany deck makes a simple outdoor living space an object of interest and beauty. Even though mahogany is naturally resistant to rot, it still requires a water repellent finish to ward off the harmful effects of Mother Nature.

A mahogany deck does seem to hold stain more evenly than other exotics. However, the key is to use the best stain for a mahogany deck, otherwise, you risk jeopardizing the wood’s appearance. Stay away from stains that form a film on the surface. These film-forming stains fail to protect dense hardwood. They are prone to wearing and peeling.

Armstrong Clark IPE Deck Stain

The best stain for a mahogany deck is one that deeply penetrates the wood’s surface. A stain like Armstrong Clark is specifically designed for exotic hardwoods like mahogany. It is formulated to soak into the wood’s dense pores to help condition and shield against weathering. The heavily bodied oils natural resist moisture and block out harmful UV rays. Armstrong deck stain holds color longer on exotic woods than any other stain on the market.

In addition to excellent water repellency and protection, Armstrong oil based stain comes in a semi-transparent mahogany color. This wonderfully enhances the natural look of mahogany making it a thing of beauty. Armstrong mahogany color deck stain will enrich your deck’s appearance and provide long-lasting protection. There is no other way to better protect the investment of a mahogany deck.

Your best bang for your buck when it comes to weather guarding your mahogany deck is applying Armstrong stain in their new mahogany color. It conditions the wood, locks out moisture, and ensures your mahogany deck will give you years of enjoyment and added value.

We have a brand new Ipe deck. Do you have more photos of Ipe with Black Walnut stain? We’re in ithe PNW. Do we wait until spring to stain it for the first time? My contractor wants to oil it soon. Thank you!

I have a mahogany deck that hasn’t been treated for some years, and the home owners like the weathered color.  Is there a stain to keep the color or even tint it more of a gray?  Something that isn’t acrylic or latex and the mahogany will absorb?  thanks

No, and you have to remove the great weathered look first when applying a stain.

We finished staining our ipe deck w/ Armstrong’s Amber three days ago, but couldn’t tell until today when it dried, that it’s very thin and uneven and needs a second coat. We’ve been walking on it lightly since. Can we stain again now? Anything we need to do first? Thnx.

Have Armstrong Clark Mahogany on an Ipe deck built over a rubber roofed living space. It’s time to refinish but I’d like to know if your Restore-A-Deck kit is safe to use without damaging the rubber roofing (which can’t be covered up since the deck stringers sit directly on the rubber).

It should not harm the roof.

HiI have a mahogany deck 10 years old that has previously been sealed ….7 years ag… with Prnofin. What’s the best sealer to use at this point in time? Yesterday, I power washed the deck after I cleaned it with Jomax and bleach. Looks nice and clean. Can I use any type of stain given the previous Penifin application.
Would Appreciate your professional opinion. Thanks Dan

You can stain now with one of the AC hardwood colors as long as your wood is clean and free of the Penofin Stain: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/wood-and-decking-stains/hardwood-and-ipe-stain

First time using your product. I’m very happy with the coverage and color . Got lucky when I sanded my mahogany porch with 80 grit and didn’t use any other grit although I had them . It really opened up boards to allow for product to penetrate!  Thanks. Follow directions on can .

We have a Cumaru deck that was originally stained (about 9 years ago) with Penofin Rosewood. (See photos). We want to restain it with AC Mahogany. We have cleaned part of the deck with Oxyclean. We also have some spots from where a bleach cleanser spilled during a house wash. Should we continue with the Oxyclean and then apply the AC stain? Any suggestions about the bleach spots? The deck and railings measure about 630 sf. Do you think two gallons will do the job? Thanks!

Is the hardwood (mahogany) deck stain recommended for UV protection on new IPE outdoor furniture? Can we apply the stain immediately on the new wood or should we wait a few months before applying the stain?  We are trying to minimize the graying. Appreciate your assistance.

The AC stains are not suggested for furniture. You cannot stain new wood right away: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain

I will say I use the mahogany stain on my ipe-and-steel furniture and it works fine.  I treat the wood furniture like decking: clean and brighten it with restore-a-deck and then stain.

Is there anything to do for ipe that seems discolored from moss or mold before staining?  This sofa normally has cushions on it and where they had moss is the lighter spots in the bend/seat of the sofa.  They’ll be covered by the cushions later so not a big deal, but I thought I’d check.  The sofa has just been cleaned and brightened with restore-a-deck but the spots remained.

Does the IPE stain work better on drier wood?  I’ve cleaned and brightened the wood and the day I stain there will have been no rain for 24 hours and no rain expected for 12 hours after, but it’s still quite damp and humid out, the wood won’t be as dry as it could be.  My other option is wait a week and hope for a longer stretch of drier weather, which I will do if it means more lasting results.

You cannot apply the AC to damp wood. You need at least 48 hours after prep, maybe longer.

I have a deck built of Jarrah timbers.  It is facing due West and some areas at the front of the deck have lost almost all the previous stain which was a semi-solid.  Is the IPE deck stain the best choice for this wood?  Or is there something else   you would recommend?  Also – since there are large areas in the most sun exposed section that are almost bare and other areas that still retain a lot of the previous stain, would you recommend sanding to remove the previous  stain ?  I know you say not to sand, but this instance seems like it might be necessary.  Thanks for your opinion and guidance.

Yes, remove all the previous coating by stripping and or sanding. Use one of the AC 3 hardwood colors.

This is my mahogany deck after I spent yesterday stripping, power washing, and then brightening. I can definitely tell the old mahogany red stain is gone, at least mostly, but I can’t tell if it’s supposed to look uneven like this. Would the unevenness in color tone show if I start staining, or should I try to strip a second time until I get a uniform natural wood color everywhere?

Does it look even when wet with water? If not, give it another strip and brighten.

I have a old mahogany deck. I power washed it, now sanding it with a 80 grit sand paper because its rough from the power washer.Next I’ll use a leaf blower to get most of the dust off. then I’ll use a deck cleaner then a brighter.Going to use a lambs wool pad to apply the stain.I still have a lot of work left to do to get ready for the stain but wondering how long it will take to receive the 5 gallon stain in the mail to Boston Massachusetts?Any other tips on refinishing the deck?

3-4 business days to arrive. Lambs wool does not work that well. Try a stain pad or brush.

You cannot spot apply brightener to even out the sanding spots. It will stain lighter no matter what in any areas that you power sanded. Only natural weathering for a few months and a full re prep would even out the porosity of the wood so it stains evenly.

I have a mahogany deck that has been stained three years ago with Benjamin Moore Arborcoar. I’d like to switch to AC.

The wood feels fairly rough to the touch. Should I strip, then sand, then brighten before staining? Or should I sand, clean, then brighten? Or sand, strip, brighten, and stain?
(I’m a bit uncertain if sanding without stripping would be sufficient).

One point of clarification: when you say “Do not sand”, is it because it’s unnecessary (to get a smooth wood feel), or is it because sanding can do more damage than good?

Sanding can reduce stain penetration. We do not suggest it unless needed to remove old coatings that cannot be stripped or to help with severely rough/splintered decks. If you sand, use no more than 60-80 grit and use the Brightener after.

Have mahogany decks – front porch, wrap around and the main deck (18 yrs old). I used a semi-solid stain once (bad decision), it peeled and was a PIA to clean off. Prior to and post to the semi-solid stain, I used Cabots Australian Timber Oil. Recent formulation of Cabots oil product is water soluble. Looking for a true oil based product (amber tint) that stands up to use for 3+yrs. 1100 sqft of deck surface – lots of work. Thank you

You use the prep products to open the pores of the wood after sanding so the stain can absorb in better.

One more question…We used your stain on our back deck this summer and love it. One thing that attracted me to your product is that we won’t have to do all the prep work to recoat when the stain begins to wear off or fade. Now we are doing the front deck which is mahogany. I have a can of TWP which is highly recommended but I see in their instructions that before recoat, we would have to go through this entire prep thing again (sanding, and then applying 1/2 bleach 1/2 water). Why is it that your stain for mahogany will not require all of the prep before re-coating? What makes your product different?

You always have to prep when recoating with a deck cleaner and a wood brightener. You do not need to sand or strip.

One coat of stain. As for color, Amber is the lightest and looks like a wet look, Mahogany is redder, and Black Walnut is much darker brown.
