Whether you are looking for a wood deck stain for pressure treated pine, cedar, redwood, or an exotic hardwood like IPE, Armstrong Clark has you covered. Both their regular wood stain and their hardwood stain have unique formulas that help to recondition wood fibers.
The exclusive blend of Armstrong Clark wood and deck stain uses nondrying oils that separate from the drying side of the formula to aid in wood conditioning. These special nondrying oils penetrate into the wood surface where the wood’s natural oils have diminished to rejuvenate the wood and add flexibility. At the same time, the drying oils stay on the surface to lock in the conditioning oils and to create a weather barrier against water and UV rays.

If I sanded and Pressure washed my deck will I still need to clean and brighten?
Yes, this helps to open up the pores of the wood.
Dealers near Philadelphia PA?
There are not any there.
Online price for 5 gallons is unbeatable, anyway. Get the stripper and the wood bleach, too – don’t skip those steps! I recommend the transparents and semi-transparents. I’ve blended the brown with red for an awesome color. It’s so good for the wood, too.

I am in the process of re-staining my decks with AC Semi-transparent in Cedar. I had previously stained these decks (4 years ago) with two coats of a mixture of AC Rustic Brown and Driftwood Gray. Because I am going lighter in color I would appreciate your advise. I have already pressure washed the decks (1 week ago) with a product called Shark Skin Wood Cleaner and Brightener. There are still a few areas that have residual gray and some knots that are holding the gray. The decking is cedar and there are a few replacement boards that that were added and then cleaned and brightened along with the old deck boards.
I will do some additional pressure washing on the few areas where the stain wasn’t fully removed. Should I sand the few knots that are still grey? This will require more drying time overall. Do I need to switch products for my prep to AC, either Strip and Brighten or Clean and Brighten? Should I stick with a darker stain since I used Rustic Brown mix before? Finally, can I wait to complete this project till the Spring since we are having regular interruptions with rain each week? Will I need to reprep at that time or just clean with soap and water?
I am attaching some pictures below.
Strip and brighten with this: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper
After that, you can assess the best course of action to take with the stain color. You can wait until Spring.

Hi A/C,
I have just restained my cedar deck with A/C rustic brown semi transparent stain. This is the third re-coating of the deck with A/C stain. I have been refreshing the stain each year as the traffic on the deck, especially in winter, wears out the stain each year (this deck is the main entry to the house so it gets lots of foot traffic on it). Last year after my first time re-coating the deck (I pressure washed the deck then re-coated with the rustic brown) we found that the non traffic parts of the deck became much darker than we wanted. So this year I did a light sanding of the deck (this took me about 5 hours for a 400 sf area with steps) and then applied the rustic brown stain. I am very pleased with the result.
In reading further about using A/C stains, on my back deck I will try using the RAD cleaner and then the bleach treatment and see what the rustic brown stain looks like vs the sanded /stained deck.
Have you any feedback on what I can expect using the RAD products vs doing a light resanding of the deck?
Here are a few photos of the deck where I have sanded and restained have the deck and am in the process of sanding the 2nd half of the deck. Note that the second step up is darker than the the rest of the deck… I had just pressure washed this step then applied stain as a test to see the difference vs the rest of the steps where I sanded then stained the steps/deck.
Thanks, Terry in Cobourg, Ontario Canada
The RAD cleaner with pressure washing is going to prep this correctly. Check out this video for some tips: https://youtu.be/RHc9l6lt0HY

These are after photos of my work with Armstrong-Clark. I won’t use anything else. There’s not a better product for rejuvenating, and preserving wood.
I’ve used it on ipe, redwood, cedar, and PT.
A biologist friend tells me that wood, although it’s been cut and milled, is still alive and continues to stay alive at the cellular level. The individual cells continue metabolic processes continually, while gradually slowing, indefinitely – unless the cell is damaged by UV rays, for instance, in which case the cell turns grey and may eventually detach from its surrounding tissue if the damage goes deep enough. The dead grey cells form a protective patina on the surface of bare wood, the result of UV rays upon a n unprotected and malnourished cell tissue.
The elements conspire to scatter all to najecway for the new. For humans, it’s better to slow or stop that process. The greying of wood is, in most cases, accompanied by dryness, which leads to cracking and warping, chafing and crumbling. Ipe is an exception because it is exceptionally dense and oily. Redwood, however, Is a softwood that can become particularly vulnerable to fungus and insect damage when it loses The tenants and compounds it relies on for such protection. Given the price of Redwood these days, it makes perfect sense to apply Armstrong Clark stains for the nourishment and protection from UV rays.
Armstrong Clark beautifies into Waze, first bye colorizing your wood structure uniformly with the natural look that you find attractive. The other way it beautifies is by keeping the wood from aging further, even reversing some of the effects of aging. When the word has what it needs to protect itself the cells will stay alive. If wood has color, it is not gray or black, it is alive. Being that wood has this life energy, we humans find it soothing and filled with positive energy.if your deck, fence or wood structure is gray or black, it can be beautified by first using the step 1 cleaner which is a high pH. The step I Cleaner will help to remove any residual paint or stains, but this is to be done after a good pressure washing to remove the majority of loose material. Then the cleaner is used, per the directions, of course. The next step would be bleaching because the cleaner will likely darken the wood considerably during the process of cleaning. Second step is a bleach, oxalic acid . Oxalic acid is made by living beings, so it is natural although it is concentrated. It makes fine bleach for wood, brightening the wood considerably. This is the important step for beautifying your project. Not only does it beautify your project but the ingredients in step 2 will neutralize the step one cleaner compound. The acid will burn off in the sun after it neutralizes The high pH cleaner. The cleaner won’t decompose in the sun as the acid will. So it’s a system that works perfectly. Live vegetation fares well during cleaning and bleaching, but the bleaching must immediately follow the cleaning. A good water spray over the vegetation before and after are good practice. In fact, everything should be wet, including the wood being treated. One would have to try hard to do this wrong. It’s actualky very easy and fairly forgiving.
The wood will continue to lighten from the effects of Step 2. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look evenly bleached when applying it- it will be uniformly lightened as long as each portion gets at least some wood bleschbon it. It’s impossible to give it too much or too little of the brightener- as long as it gets some.brightenerbon the entire visible surface.
i recommend the transparent stains, even mixing colors. I also recommend getting the 5-gallon bucket instead of five 1-gallon buckets. One 5-gallon bucket is less expensive. The five singles would need to be combined in a large bucket anyway to ensure uniform color. Plus, the larger bucket is good for rollers.
The fastest, most economical method of application is with a black-and-Decker/Stanley “control stainer” electric sprayer, despite the fact that some is lost to the breeze. Armstrong-Clark is mostly oils, so the sprayer is much faster than brushing or rolling – although you’ll need both to backbrush and back till the stain once applied. You’ll find that the knots will soak up the stain greedily. The wood will drink up only as much as it can hold. And you won’t want the stain to pool on the surface because it will get sticky. Rolling or brushing off the excess or just to redistribute the oil is important. Armstrong-Clark is the answer to keeping wood alive, even reversing the effects of dryness and aging. I’ve used their stains for almost 20 years – never a complaint – only very pleased customers!
i did try another product at the insistence of my customer – she called me after a few days complaining about the results of the stain she purchased (starts with a “C”). Not only was the color purple, but it was splotchy and not at all absorbed into the wood. I had to sand it all down again. She begged me to use the stain I recommended , Armstrong-Clark. She is very happy with Armstrong-clark.
I vowed to never again use anything else. I will walk away from any stain job if it’s not armstrong-clark. I usually get it from Kelly-Moore paints, but KM seems to be struggling in Home Depot’s shadow. I use mostly “redwood tone” “rustic brown” and neutral.
Does the semi-transparent dry in a matt finish? or is it glossy.
There is not a shine with the AC stains.

I need help with several questions about my new deck. The pressure treated lumber deck was installed at the end of May. When should it be stained? And, should it be cleaned or brightened before hand?
Let me explain as I need all the help I can get. I had a deck at my old house, didn’t know what I was doing and am sure I got “taken” for several thousand dollars. This time I want to do it right. Thank you.
As the above article states, 3-6 months after install. It also states to prep the wood with a cleaner and a brightener. Please follow the directions in the article :).
Thanks!
