You should strip and brighten for the prep with the Restore A Deck products first. Most likely do not need to sand but if you do, make sure it is lightly done after the prep.
We have a 14 yr. old mahogany deck that is weathered gray now. Previous owners applied varnish which has weathered away. We want to restore to the original light mahogany color. We live in Maine near the ocean. We tried a sample of Penofin but it darkens the wood to almost black. Should we sand the gray away? Should we clean before or after sanding with deck cleaners (sodium hydroxide)? Deck gets mid-day sun but we don’t want a dark color as it will be too hot on the feet. I may want to try some samples… but want UV protection too. Possibly your gray stain? Thanks.
Janey, I would highly suggest you order some samples to test from the site first as colors will look different once applied. It is not hard to sue but do not get anything on the house. We like stain pad applicators for best results.
We moved into a new home in May, 2013. The deck was probably built sometime in February or March, it’s made of treated pine and we have not put anything on the deck. I was told that we needed to clean and brighten with restore-a-deck and use an Armstrong Clark stain. I am trying to pick out an appropriate color and want to get the stain ordered. Our house is primarily brown brick and stone.We were thinking cedar but don’t want to go too red. I think you have the really brown tones and the sienna but do you have something in the middle that’s not a yellowish color? We want to be able to enhance the grain of the wood so would you recommend a semi-transparant? Since this is an oil base stain, how difficult is it to use and be sure that none of this gets on our house and discolors it? Should we hand brush everything on?

Kimberly, you can order the products on the site here. You would need about 6-7 gallons of stain for the dock. For best sun protection, we would suggest one of the semi-solid colors. You can also order the Restore A Deck Kit above for the prep. You would need 2 of those.
