Armstrong-Clark’s deck and siding wood stain makes use of conditioning oils that part from the drying oils in the formula. The nondrying oils penetrate into the wood and take the place of the wood’s diminishing natural oils. This process revives and restores wood.
The drying oils stay on the wood surface and lock in the conditioning oils to produce a barrier that is dry to the touch. Armstrong’s deck and siding wood stain contain vegetable oils in addition to transparent pigments, solvents, mildewcides and water repellents.
- Application can be done in direct sunlight and on hot days. If the first coat of stain penetrates within 30 minutes an additional coat may be applied for extra protection.
- Applies easily by roller, brush, or airless sprayer. During spraying – going back over with a brush or roller will help give a more even appearance. After 24 hours any remaining puddles or glossy spots can be removed using a dry rag.
- Older wood is reconditioned by deep penetrating nondrying oils.
- Drying oils lock in the conditioning oils while pigments and water repellents lock out moisture and UV damage.
- Armstrong wood stain is compliant with all environmental standards.
- Does not contain any offensive odors.
Coverage Area
Armstrong-Clark Deck and Siding Stain applies at 150-200 sq ft per gallon. Depending on wood porosity, actual coverage will vary.

Can this product be shipped toBritish Columbia Canada , and will Canada allow entry??
Can you tell what the cost of shipping 2 gallons might be ?
Yes, and for shipping costs. add to cart and enter your shipping address for the total cost.
I lightly power-washed my cedar deck to preserve the wood grain, but there’s just some residual stain here and there. Can I just keep it there and stain over it. Looks like I’ll need 2 coats of the semi-transparent.
If a different brand of stain you will need to remove it as much as possible if not 100%.
The stain was Armstrong-Clark Rustic Brown, semi-transparent, and the new stain is Armstrong-Clark Driftwood, semi-transparent. In a test, two coats of the Driftwood seems to cover most of the Rustic Brown residue. Do you think that’s ok from a performance standpoint?
Yes.
Thanks. Here is the test. See attached. Do you have any additional comments?
Nothing additional.
Thanks for your help. Steve
Is there a sealant you recommend after using this? Thank you!
It is not possible to apply a sealer over a deck stain, it will peel. No need as well.
Oh man. Good to know. Thank you!! Ordering our stain through you guys so wanted to make sure we have everything we need. Sealant is only for paint or water based stains then or ? Thank you again for your timely response and knowledge.
No stain or paint can have a sealer applied on top. They will all peel.
Which stain is best for high traffic areas?
Any of them AC colors. They will all wear the same.
Follow up to the stupid question about opening cans. Never mind – I figured out that the plastic ring comes off.
How do you open the gallon cans of stain?
Pry off the white ring inwards and then use a screwdriver to take off the ring.
50 vocs on a mineral spirit clean-up product?
Yes.
If I am sanding the entire deck, do I need to do anything else before applying a semi-transparent stain? And is the second coat recommended to be applied while the first is still “wet”?
Clean and brighten after sanding to open up the pores and removed sand dust using this kit: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-kit
Hello, I currently have the semi transparent cedar stain on my deck, but it has faded quite a bit. It is not peeling at all – however I was looking to change the color to the natural oak (since not quite as reddish) What steps do I need to take to do so?Thanks
Prep with this kit: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper
I’ve got another unrelated question, so I’m posting it separately from my question below. My mother in law tried rolling on a semi solid maintenance coat after washing with oxy/dish soap. She’s afraid she over applied because it didn’t soak in well. Should she do anything or just let it keep drying?
Let it dry.
I’ve got a myriad of products on my deck (back is Valspar – which I think is acrylic, front is Cabot – which I think is oil, and side is unknown – probably another oil based). I’d like to go to only AC, will stripping be sufficient, or will I need to sand the Valspar? If I’m going to sand one portion, should probably sand it all? Thanks.
You will probably have to sand to get it all off.
HelloWe have used Transparent Cedar on our deck (and fence). We restrain it every two years, even three years. On the off summers, we use a non bleach deck cleaner product which restores it pretty well.
Last summer we inadvertently applied Semi Transparent Cedar. Just this weekend, we used Oxyclean and dish soap in place of a commercial product to clean the deck and it came out much more patchy than before. Some areas look much more “bleached” than we expected, and the stain is still quite evident in other areas. We would like to apply just one coat of stain to correct the uneven look.
However, we ultimately would like to go back to the Transparent Cedar stain. Our question is – can we we put the Transparent Cedar over the Semi Transparent stain. Or do we need to apply one coat of the Semi Transparent for now and then wait to do the whole deck and clean/strip it properly before starting over with the Transparent Cedar?
Thanks.
Wendy
To go back to Transparent Cedar you will need to strip and brighten for prep. If you apply one coat now, you will need to do the semi-transparent cedar.
If I buy 2 1-gallon pails, do they need to be mixed together if I am using them on the same deck?
They do not have to.
Hello. It has been 24 hours since I stained my deck. I went with Oxford Brown solid as I had to repair some of the boards and felt anything lighter/semi-transparent wouldn’t match given the new wood/old wood construction. I applied the wood stain using a staining brush during the day yesterday and the temperature was in the low 70’s. I used a brush to make sure I didn’t over apply stain, frequently going back and forth over each board. This morning there looked to be a few wet spots still so I went over them with rags per guidance on side of can (not quite 24 hours…more like 20). After wiping off the excess it got pretty hot and the deck dried out nicely. Afraid to walk on it just yet, I rubbed my fingers over several of the boards. Even though the wood looks very dry, I was getting some stain off onto my fingers. My fingers were not wet, but it was obvious the stain was coming off on them. For prep on the older boards I power washed, gently, the cedar wood. Then I washed the boards with a deck prep solution and scrubbed with a deck brush. I then let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing. I also sanded the floor boards with 120 grit sand paper to help get off some of the older production. I they used a blower to get all the dust off. I waited 48 hours after cleaning to allow for maximum dryness before applying the stain.
We are expecting some rain tomorrow. If I am still getting some of the stain off on my hands/shoes what would you recommend as far as next steps? Cleaning with some light detergent & water and a deck brush followed by a good rinse? I want to be clear that the wood is dry to the touch but my fingers are picking up some of the pigment. The product on my fingers is not wet, but not dusty like if I didn’t get the sawdust off the wood after sanding up well enough. This pigment comes off easily with just some soap & water, not staying on my hands. Thanks for your help.
FYI, sanding close the pores of the grain and is not always a good idea. If you sand, never more than 60-80 grit. Too fine and the stain can have issues soaking into the wood.
The stain can take several days to fully cure when it cannot fully soak in. The rain tomorrow will not harm anything and will probably help. Just leave it alone since it has only been 24 hours. It will cure in time.
Thank you!
Hello, call the 800 number on the can for some help and advice on this.
Hi – how long should I expect a newly stained deck to “off gas” so to speak? I did the whole process of restore-a- deck strip/brightener/power wash dried for 5 days, stained it and I have to say I am extremely pleased! The deck looks amazing, the stain went on so smooth and uniform. One coat of the semi solid was perfect.
The deck looks and feels dry to the touch but it’s been almost 2 weeks now and the smell that wafts into the house from the open windows is still rather pronounced. Is this normal?
Thanks!
A good rain and it should dissipate.
good to know! Thanks.
I bought a sample of the semi-solid in Sequoia to use on an old cedar swingset. The area I tested looked amazing but when I looked into buying a gallon, the semi-solid stain description states it is not for playground equipment or furniture. Why is that? Does the color rub off on clothing or is it toxic? Is there an equivalent color in another appropriate stain here? I’m so bummed. Thanks in advance for your insight!
It is possible to have rub off with the semi-solid colors so it is not suggested for furniture or playsets. Any of the other AC colors will work. Sierra Redwood would be closest..
I have a three year old pine deck that was stained with Armstrong Clark semi-trans. I would like to use the Armstrong Clark semi solid next time. Do I need to strip/brighten or clean/brighten? Do you think semi-solid is good choice for gulf coast of Florida with humidity and full sun?
Strip and brighten would be best. It will work great in FL.
How long after application will slight rain not bother stain, small chance of rain day after we plan on staining. We used same stain 2 years ago and have already used cleaner and brightener.
About 4-6 hours after applying.
Thank you, how long should I wait after rain before application? Does wood need an entire day to dry out prior to applying?
48 hours after rain or prep to apply.
I’ve made 4 test samples. They are lumber yard douglas fir. I used the cleaner, but not the brightener. I do plan on using the brightener with the actual project. I used 2 coats of the stain, with the 2nd coat applied while the 1st coat was still wet. I allowed them to dry a couple days. It’s been raining the last 2 days here and I placed the samples out in the rain and they didn’t really bead up. I believe seeing somewhere that you use parafin in the stain. Is it okay to add a coat of mineral oil/parafin mixture over the stain, after the initial 2 coats of color, as an added sealer?
You can never apply a coating or sealer over a deck stain, it will peel. Alos, you do not want the stain to bead water as the wood needs to breathe. That is a misconception. AC sheds water and is still breathable.
Thanks for the information. You learn something every day.
Is it appropriate for rough textured cedar siding?
Yes!
We just finished staining our cedar benches with semi-transparent cedar stain and realize it is a little too reddish. Any recommendation on how the color can be toned down a bit? Yes, we made a mistake not getting sample to try it out first! 🙁 Also is there such thing as a stain that gives you a glossy finish?
You cannot tone down the color but you can remove and start over with a different color. https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper
Another question. Parts of the cedar bench are turning black (see photo). It is likely because those parts are under the tree so are not getting any sun. Any advice on how to clean it?
Warm water and some dish soap. Apply and lightly wipe or brush off with a car wash (non-abrasive) brush.
Can I use a stain on a teak table and chairs?
If yes, what stain do you recommend?
Yes, try Amber color. One light coat.
Can I use Black Walnut on new mahogany decking? In the future would I be able to paint over it with a water-base paint, like a latex porch or floor paint?
See this for new wood tips: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
redwood
Do you have any photos of grey driftwood color on cedar. I am ready to order for my deck(I got your sample) but I have another small protect and I would like to see how the hay look in the cedar.
We do not.
Is the semi trans driftwood grey recommended to be used in cedar outdoor furniture? Do you carry any white stain for furniture?
You can use the gray for cedar wood. We do not have a white color.
Is AC stain suitable for exterior “Honduran” mahogany doors? If so, are the cleaning and/or stripping products suitable too?
The AC is not suggested for doors.
Is the mahogany hardwood stain suitable for protecting cedar fencing?
Mahogany will work on all wood types but it will not look like the picture above as that is on an exotic hardwood. On cedar it will be more red/orange.
About three weeks after I treated my deck with the hardwood mahogany stain, some folks tracked very muddy boots all over the deck and it dried. It has ben very hard to get the mud prints off (I have hosed it, scrubbed it, etc.). Is there anything I can do to get the mud off without having to start all over and re-clean, re-brighten, and re-stain the deck?
You cannot just remove the mud and not harm the stain in some way if the mud is stuck to the stain. You would have to redo the prep and stain.
The entire deck is covered in furries. Should i sand or continue to stain when dried? Thanks.
You can do either. They typically do not show when stained. Same as when it was wet you cannot see it.
We did the paint stripper and brightener steps. The wood isn’t fully dry yet but why is it drying white? Is this ok or should I rinse and dry again? Applying semi transparent stain
That is normal and the nature of the wood.
What if we do the work first thing in the morning (late 60s or early 70s temp) and the temp falls below 50 that night? Would that be ok?
Yes.
Our deck is over 6 years old. It has some kind of semi-transparent stain. I plan to use the wood cleaner and brightener, then sand with pole sander and 120 grit sandpaper before applying semi-transparent rustic-brown. I am guessing I have to repeat these steps in 2 years? Deck is in NC and gets morning sun (full shade past noon) and is in NC. Also, if I need a second coat, do i jus walk over wettish first coat to apply the second coat? Thank you.
You would need to strip and brighten for prep to remove the old coating. Do not sand. Inf the future, clean and brighten for recoats with eh same AC stains and color. See here about applying. https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/how-to-apply-a-maintenace-coat-of-armstrong-clark
thank u for replying. I just ordered the stain and prep kit! We had the deck professionally power washed in April this year. Do we need to rent power washer for staining or will a regular hose with jet stream attachment do? The deck including steps is abt 140 sqft. I’ve only ordered one gallon.
Use a pressure washer is best for prep.
I just sanded my porch for probably the first time in 90 years. As you can see the wood is not in the best condition in some places. However, it is covered so I don’t need to worry about direct sun and water damage. I’d like to use a transparent or semi transparent stain. Which do you suggest?
Clean and brighten the wood for final prep and then any color that you like will work. Most use semi-transparent colors.
Thank you. How long after cleaning and brightening do I have to wait to apply stain?
48 hours.
I have just finished installing a redwood deck on a screened in porch. The redwood is 50+ yrs old and I removed it from another screened in porch. I will be sanding it this week with a floor sander from the local hardware store. Your stain (semi-trans Rustic Brown) should be here on Tuesday Oct. 13, 2020. Do I need to wait a few days before applying the stain and can I use a roller to apply the stain? Can I use paint thinner for clean up?
Thanks
If you sand, you would need to clean and bright after that for final prep and this opens up the wood pores. Only one coat of the AC stain. Do not use a roller to apply. Stain pads or brushes. Mineral spirits to clean.
can you protect the wood w varnish after AC stain?
No, it would peel.
refinishing mahagony deck, built in 3 sections over last 3 years so it is darker in original section, w/ new wood in most recent section. previously used messners and superdeck in mahagony stains.
1. will the RAD stripper/brightener kit even out the color before new staining?
2. what color armstrong clark stain do you recommend to darken to original reddish brown color, but not a deep red?
1. Close but not exactly. Also, see this about new wood: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
2. Amber.
I have a natural cedar deck with several new/replaced boards. The original boards are a nice weathered grey but the new boards are obviously the new warm red tone. What stain would I use to help make it all look like one color? Any special prep required?
See here about new wood and prep: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
will A-C stain interact with a silicone membrane (under the deck planks)?
what about the RAD products?
thanks
john
They should not.
Should I use a water repellant preservative before applying your semi solid stain. We are refinishing an old deck of pressure treated pine.
You cannot apply a sealer prior to applying the AC stains.
How long does it take from when I order, to you guys shipping it from you establishment?
Depends on where you live? 3-6 days is average.
Will a semi transparent stain last as long as a semi solid?
Yes.
Can you recommend an airless sprayer for semi-transparent stain?
Any quality airless paint sprayer should work.
How do you darken the driftwood semi transparent. You mention it can be done. Thanks
You cannot add tint to the AC stains but you can mix two colors of the AC stain together. You cannot darken the gray though as there is not a darker gray color.
Does the Driftwood Semi-Transparent Stain mimic the old Cabot’s Bleaching Oil or is it a totally different animal.
Looking to apply on #1 Cedar Sidewall Shingles.
It is not the same.
I have a large-ish bamboo deck (specifically, bamboo fibre). Wondering if the ‘regular’ stain or the hardwood stain is called for.
Also, are brushes and pads equally good for application? Ideally, I’d like to use a pad. Roller is out, I know, and I’d rather not have to hand brush due to the size of the deck.
Sorry but the AC stains will not work on bamboo.
Appreciate the answer. Can you tell me why that is? You have products for everything from cedar to zebra. Just wondering what makes the bamboo an exception.
Bamboo is to dense for the stain to soak in.
Hello Again – I see that I can order the cleaner, brightener and stain right here online with free shipping. I live in Pioneer CA – can you give me an idea of how long it will take for the product to arrive?
About 5-6 business days to CA.
I had a new pool deck built 2 years ago, but never stained it. About a month and a half ago, I power washed it and now want to stain using the semi transparent in Natural Oak. Is the anything else I need to do before I stain?
I live in western New York where the summers are humid and average 80-90 degrees. The deck is in full sun for most of the day.
You still have some gray that should be removed. Use this kit while pressure washing: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-kit
Found Rad and Armstrong semi trans cedar stain in basement of older house we bought.
Rad did fabulous job in preparing deck, as you can see from the pics, but it has rained every other day for a week. Temps in the mid to high 20s Celsius. 1: How long after last rain before I can stain? 2: Is brushing preferred over rolling.?(or rolling then brushing) 3:And is this older Armstrong the same as the Armstrong Clark stains and can I top it up with a gallon of semi cedar if needed? 4: is there any advantages to applying a second coat?
1. 48 hours
2. brushes or stain pads are best
3. The old stain has gone bad most likely. Use fresh product
4. Only if needed
What do I look for to tell if it is bad..crystallizing?
Clumping and or skinning.
