Brand new this year to the great Armstrong Clark Wood Stain colors is the new Espresso Semi-Solid. This new semi-solid color will highlight the wood grain with a rich deep brown tone while offering the best UV protection of our stain color choices.
We now offer several 5 semi-solid deck stain colors: Espresso, Mountain Cedar, Sequoia, Woodland, and Oxford Brown.
Repainting house built in the 60s or early 70s
Smooth v groove cedar, been done over the years with sikens srd , possibly some cetol 23 as well.
No peeling, just due.
I haven’t been happy with sikens for several years but like the look.
Are your products compatible to go over it? Maybe palm sand it with 120 or 150 grit first?
Suggestions appreciated
Whenever switching brands of stains you will need to remove the prior coating. We would need to see pics uploaded in comments for advice on doing this.
Best stain to use on 10 year old western red cedar?
Any color of the AC stains that you like will work: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/wood-and-decking-stains
I did not ask what color…Which stain semi or solid?
AC does not come in a solid color. Any of the colors and transparency that you like in the above color chart.
Could you provide pics of IPE decking stained with Espresso vs Oxford Brown vs Black Walnut?
It would be so very much appreciated.
Of these colors, only Black Walnut can be used on IPE wood. You cannot use the semi solid colors on IPE.

What color stain is pictured here?
That is IPE wood with Amber color. You cannot get regular wood like pressure treated pine and cedar to look like this.
Here is a picture of where some of the stain or wood is flaking (not bad after fifteen years)!
House I live is used AC natural tone oil stain on garage door and siding applied 15 years ago. Can I do light sanding and reapply AC natural tone oil stain or do I need to otherwise treat? Thanks ?
Do not sand for prep but clean and brighten for prep with this kit and light pressure washing: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-kit
Does ac come in semi transparent?
Yes, it does: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/wood-and-decking-stains
Can you post a few pictures of completed decks that were done in Espresso? Thank you in advance!
Thank you!

I just had a new redwood fence installed. So if I understand correctly I am to wait a year before using the Semi-solid product? I’m not happy with the variation of the redwood board colors and want to stain it for a more even and protected look.
Yes. Wait a year and prep.
Can “new” wood wait a year stored in a shed or does it need to be installed and exposed to the elements?
Needs to be installed and then weathered.
I had stained my home with cabots stain, Oxford brown five years ago. The clean up
was with soap and water. Will this product work over the stain that is on there now.
Will the product penetrate into the wood once it was done before with the stain I
used in the past. I was told that I can’t use an oil based stain once I had used a water
based product.
No, you would have to remove the Cabot fully first.
Can A.C. Semi-solid stain be applied to new KD PT pine decking without waiting a year as you suggest. KD lumber can usually be stained when new.
No, it has to wait a year for the semi-solid, and KDAT cannot be stained right away even with the semi-transparent stain. That is false info they tell folks.
Will AC semi solid oxford brown or espresso be able to cover this pressure treated wood?
Not unless you remove the current stain.
I’ve purchased A-C semi-solid Mountain Cedar to apply to a cedar porch that we have sanded to bare wood. After all that work and wanting this application to last as long as possible, we’re wondering if we should/could apply 2 coats with a short drying time in between coats. I believe I read that your semi-solid stain should not be applied wet-on-wet, is that correct? Would 2 coats help the finish last longer? The large side of porch faces south.
Only one coat will work on this sanded wood. Do not apply two. It will not cure correctly.
We thought a 2nd coat might give us longer longevity before we have to do this process all over again. How long will Mountain Cedar semi-solid curing take – week, or weeks, month(s), a year? We are prepared to wait a week between coats if we can gain longevity. Can we gain more longevity in years on our porch restoration if we apply a 2nd coat once the 1st coat has cured?
No, more is not better and will not last longer or cure properly.
I did my deck in semi transparent rustic brown and it looks wonderful! But I’m thinking next time I would like to go a bit darker and try your new expresso semi solid. 1. How long do I have to wait before I try another stain after apply this first one? 2. Can I put semi solid over semi transparent? 3. What prep would I do to the deck before I try a new stain?
Wait until next year at the earliest and prep with the Restore A Deck Kit: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-kit
Just one coat of the stain.
Previously used Behr Deckover on Michigan deck with disastrous results! Peeling year after year, application after application. Like the idea of semi-solid but cannot have the peeling issues again after spending two summers scraping, sanding and prepping! Is your semi-solid good for Michigan weather without peeling? If not, what do you recommend?
It is a penetrating stain and does not peel.
Is this product good for outdoor teak furniture?
Sorry but no, do not use the semi-solids on furniture.
