Best Stain Armstrong Clark Stain for a Tigerwood Deck
Tigerwood originates from several different types of exotic Brazilian hardwoods. It offers one of the most unique grain patterns you will ever see. It gets its name from its orange hue and dark vein stripping which give it a tiger-like appearance. Tigerwood is very popular for interior and exterior applications. It is a beautiful species of wood for an exterior deck. Although Tigerwood is naturally oily and water resistant, it still needs to have a protective finish to slow weathering.
The best stain for a Tigerwood deck is one that will penetrate deep and allow the wood pores to absorb the stain. Like most exotic hardwoods, it is very dense in nature and will not absorb an inferior stain. Once the Tigerwood begins to dry out it loses its natural oils, which can cause rapid deterioration. Using a conditioning oil stain like Armstrong Clark is really the best option.
Armstrong oil based deck stains are an excellent choice for a Tigerwood deck. The stain utilizes both nondrying and drying oils that separate once applied. The nondrying or conditioning oils, dive into the wood and replace the diminishing natural oils, which helps to revitalize the nature of the wood. Furthermore, the drying side of the stain formula remains at the surface and forms a protective barrier locking in the conditioning oils.
Armstrong stain comes in a wide variety of colors. What seems to look best on a Tigerwood deck is either Amber or Mahogany. Either of these two colors will enhance the natural beauty of the Tigerwood and create a gorgeous finish. Using the best stain for a Tigerwood deck will also create a weather-resistant shield helping to preserve the wood. Refinishing the wood should be done every one to two years depending on climate, sun exposure, foot traffic, etc.
To keep a Tigerwood deck looking good, clean and re-stain it with the same color of Armstrong oil based deck stain when needed. Keeping your Tigerwood deck coated with the best stain will ensure it remains structurally sound and appears new all year long.

Hello, I’m going to be applying one of your products to my newly constructed tigerwood deck. I have tried some samples and am considering the amber color. My question and or concern is over time will the pigments in the stain build up in the wood and distort the natural color variation of the wood? I know the natural color stain that you offer has little to no uv protection but would this be a better choice considering the consern? I live in Wyoming. Elevation 4500ft cold winters-20, hot summers 100f
AC stains fade over time. Not sure what you mean by “over time will the pigments in the stain build up in the wood and distort the natural color variation of the wood”. All stains and wood will change over time when exposed to UV. Hence why you need to prep and reapply as needed. The pigments will not buildup to mask the wood like an opaque stain.
Hello everyone! I have a deck with tiger wood railing – installed in 2019 – it was just beautiful when installed – it’s exposed to rain and sun and quickly became more of a silver/grey color – one time I did put some Thompson water seal on it but over time it became super dirty! I used a power spray and you can see in the picture the difference!! But soon as it dried it went dry and Grey – I wanted to see how to care for this and get that beautiful color (stripes) back!!?

Prep with Restore A Deck Stripper and Brightener kit.
I am looking for some pictures of what tigerwood looks like with the dark walnut stain applied?
Best to test samples on your wood to be certain of the color: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/samples
hello, I have a tigerwood desk that gets some water but not much. we used one oil base finish but every bit of dust stuck to it. we’ve used a water base but any water brings put a whiteish look to it. we are going to sand it down and start over in the spring. which Armstrong product do recommend that will bring put the natural beauty of the grain, durable and where it is available in Canada?
One of these 3 colors for your wood: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/wood-and-decking-stains/hardwood-and-ipe-stain
Only available online from our website.
When using your Amber stain on a tiger wood deck….when it comes to reapplying in 1-2 years, do we need to strip it all off and start again? Or because we are using the same product we can just reapply over?
No need to strip. Clean and reapply.
Without stripping??
I have used clear Ipe oil on my tiger wood deck. It gets full sun and fades quickly here in the northeast. If I power wash and clean could I just switch to your product??
Use the Restore A Deck Stripper and Brightener kit for the prep while pressure washing.
Is that something you sell??
https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper
It only has 2 coats of Ipe oil. What would happen if I put your product on a super clean deck.
You cannot apply the AC over a different brand of stain. It needs to be removed and is very easy to do with the stripper.

Thank you. Looks right. Since I will be sealing/coating the floor as well to preserve it for longer, any recommendations for the type of product used with the prior recommendation? I’ve heard when staining and sealing your floors there can be certain reactions from the multiple compounds that will mess with the coloration. Thanks again for the insight! Wyatt
You cannot seal or coat over the AC stains not can you apply the AC stain over another coating.
Hello, I just resurfaced my indoor tiger wood and am having a hard time finding the right finish to restart its life before naturally getting dark again in another 10 years. What is recommended for this? Thank you! Wyatt
Try the Amber color: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/wood-and-decking-stains/hardwood-and-ipe-stain
How soon before I can stain a new Tigerwood deck? Thank you
See here about new wood: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
We ordered two samples and applied them to our tiger woods deck. Three days later it rained for the first time. My husband wiped the test patches with a paper towel and some of the stain came off. Is this typical? We’ve had a LOT of trouble with other products completely fading/coming off and we don’t want to go down that road again.
It was not fully cured yet. Once cured, it does not wipe off.
Thank you for your reply. How long does it take to cure?
Usually a few days or so.
Hello, looking for guidance on if/how to re stain and finish deck. Been in house 6yrs, deck already in place. Have not stained or finished since moving in. Generally 3 levels of wear: max exposure, mid exposure, and no exposure (covered deck part).
Strip and brighten all wood and then use a hardwood stain color.
Thank you — are these products you carry?
Yes
Hey all,
I built my Tigerwood deck 5 years ago and love it. I’ve used a few different companies like (I.e deckwyse, Messmer and so on) and I can never get that rich red look like when I first installed it like in pictures I posted . I would like to try your product but wanna know first if there is anyway to achieve that? Any suggestions??
thanks
Joe
Strip and brighten for prep and try the Mahogany color.
Would amber give me more of the color of the first 2 pictures??
thanks
Yes.
Tha is for all your help. One last question. Do you have any pictures of a Tigerwood deck with amber stain on it?? Couldn’t find any on your website or anywhere on web
Thanks
We do not.
Ok thanksagain for your help.
My tigerwood deck is approximately seven years old. I have used an ipe oil on it every one-two years. The finished deck looks great, but the oil stays sticky for a couple of weeks after application. Dirt gets stuck to it, and now my deck has deeply seated dirt that I can’t remove even with power washing. I want to switch to Armstrong stain, but want to get my deck thoroughly clean first. How would you recommend I clean my deck? Thanks!
Strip and brighten for the prep: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper
I have a tiger wood deck 12’X16′. It was not cleaned for 2 years. Three years ago it was cleaned and Penofin was applied. Approx 1/3 of deck is silver and then it gets gradually more color as it is partially covered. I just pressure washed it, and, wonder it putting using penofin clear will bring the color out on the silver weathered part. Or, should I use the Armstrong Amber or Mahogany on all of it. Amber sounds like a light color and Mahogany sounds like a darker brown. Help! Kind Regards
Use the Amber for an enhanced wet look to the wood.
I made a Tigerwood swim platform for my boat and it needs staining. I have been using teak oil but it dosn’t last very long. Will your product last longer? What is the cleaning/recoat method.
If it is constantly submerged in water then no, nothing will last very long. It will last longer than the teak oil though. Prep with the Restore A Deck Cleaner: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-wood-cleaner
It gets wet but out of water 75% of the time. How about a film forming stain like Sikkens Marine is what I’m familiar with. Thanks for the reply.
A film-forming stain will not work. It will blister and peel.
I have been using the Armstrong mahogany stain on my Tigerwood decks for six years, now. I love this stain. It’s beautiful and long-lasting and I will continue to use it. I re-stain every two years or so. My only concern is that it takes a good week to dry, with a couple of wipings (after 24 hours) required. My front deck is covered and the stain only really needs to be touched up a bit. Is it OK to thin the stain so I can put just a thin coating on? If so, with what? Thank you.
Sorry but no, you cannot thin it.
How long should I wait to stain a new Tigerwood deck that gets full sun? Additionally, what type of prep do you recommend?
See this about new wood: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/new-decking-and-armstrong-clark-stain
I would like to know if it is a good idea to seal a recently oiled tigerwood deck with a varnish to keep that beautiful stained wet look ?
No, you cannot use a varnish on exterior wood as it will blister and peel. It will ruin the wood.
Ah ok. my last question is you advise to use a semi solid stain which the best for the protection, eg the mahogany, but you don’t have the mahogany in the semi solid stain colors, which one can i use then
Mahogany does not come in a semi-solid. Semi-solids will not work for exotic hardwoods as the wood is too dense.
There is no difference.
the IPE stain cst $ 234.99 and the Armstrong stain $209.99
No, it is the same price of $234.99 if you pick those colors.
Hi i ve a masaranduba hardwooden floor i live next to the beach which stain can i use for muy deck the IPE stain or the normal Armstrong stain and which color match the best with the massaranduba color?
what is the difference between these 2 stains?
There are not different formulas but rather 3 colors that are designed for Exotic Hardwoods. Amber, Mahogany, and Black Walnut. You can use any of these colors for your wood type.
We have retained our tiger wood deck three times with a stain for tiger wood purchased from the company we bought it from. Every time we restained it, the color became darker and darker until now its dark brown almost black in some places. Doesn’t look good. Should we start all over and strip off the stain? If so, what is the best way to do this? Thank you.
Yes, you need to remove the previous coatings. What brand was it? The brand and type will determine how best to remove. You can also post a picture here.
The brand is In-Wood Exterior Wood Stain. Thank you.
Prep by using this kit and pressure washing: https://www.armstrongclarkstain.com/restore-a-deck-stripper
Once removed, you will be ready to apply the AC stain.
Our deck is just over 1,000 sq. ft. and we just got a quote for $4,500 to redo it just the way you are recommending. That’s very expensive. Do we have to redo the deck this way every 2-3 years or what do you recommend?
Thanks,
Jytte
You will need to redo every 2-3 years. Might want to shop around. Call Deck Restoration Contractors for quotes, not painters.
I was afraid you were going to say that! Is there a different way of maintaining a tiger wood deck? Can you let it go grey and just treat it with colored oil or do you have another suggestion?
Really appreciate your input!
Jytte
No easier way to treat the wood. Just clean and redo with the AC stain as needed.
I have a tigerwood deck that is about four years old. I have used Penofin-hardwood, but it is too labor-intensive to rub off and does not last in the sun. I would like to switch to Armstrong-Clark hardwood stain that doesn’t have to be rubbed off. Would I have to use a stripper, or would a cleaner and brightener be enough preparation for the Armstrong-Clark stain?
Strip and brighten would be best to make sure that all the Penofin is removed.

I try to clean and does not look any better. Can I put a mold inhibitor (Wet and Forget) on first let dry and then apply the amber stain and then re coat with a mold inhibitor after stain has dried. The deck gets a lot of morning and early afternoon sun until ~3pm or 4pm in summer and less in winter. What other recommendations could you help with
No you cannot do these steps. Start by removing all of the Messmers with the Restore A Deck Stain Stripper and pressure washing. Wait 2 days and apply the Armstrong Amber stain. Once fully dried, you can apply wet and forget on top.

All AC colors will show the grain of the wood but enhance the grain based on the tint you choose. Best to try some samples.
Hi there. Need some help. I have a Tiger Wood deck by my pool and have had it about 6 years. For a the first 4 years i did buy the Armstrong stain but my deck just kept looking darker and dirtier and the boards started to worp. Last year we used A Beng Moore stair for hardwoods and it just made it worse. We just sanded it down the best we could and got back to some of the nice red in the wood but because the boards have warped, some spots are still the dingy brown. We sanded like i said, poer washed and were planning to let it dry out for a week and i was on line to order the Armstrong stain again. What are we doing wrong? I spent a pretty penny on this deck and am now regretting it. Help?
You are not doing anything wrong but your wood type needs to be done annually. Clean and reapply every year. A stain stripper would remove the old stain.
