I live in Massachusetts. Built pressure treated deck around in ground pool in July/ August. It was 80percent covered by pool tarp over winter. Want to use semi transparent grey on deck this summer. Does it need to be prepped? Where can I buy necessary products?

Will deck that was covered by tarp all winter stain differently than deck boards that were exposed to the elements all winter? Do covered boards need to be dried out before staining?
Yes. You need to weather all wood fully exposed for at least 3 months and then prep.

I’m looking to stain new (1 year old) Siberian larch decking (deep grain brushed) in semi solid oil in a deep brick or mahogany starting in late September in Massachusetts. 1. Will there be enough drying time before the inclement weather? 2. Will it be dry to the touch in a few days or will it always have a residue? 3. What is the best applicator, brush or pad?
1. It should be.
2. Dries and cures fully. Do not over apply. Only 1 voat.

Thank you for the quick response. I’ve attached a few photos of the material. It is considered soft, not hard wood but slow grown. I want to use the mahogany oil based stain, for a darker finish. 1. Will it be strong enough to overcome the natural yellow tones of the wood? 2. The deck is 16’ x 14’, how much stain should be purchased?
Mahogany is red not brown. Best to get some samples from our site to test colors. About 2 gallons for the deck.

No, you can never apply urethane over an exterior wood/deck stain. Urethanes will peel on outside wood.
We live on the coast of California. We get a lot of fog in the morning and damp nights almost like rain. Can we still use the stain? Also how long can I expect this to last on a fence?
You cannot stain if the wood is wet. Has to be fully dry. On a fence, 3-7 years.

Hi again. Thanks for your recent response. My pressure treated pine deck is 8 years old and was stained with your product. I’ve now pressure washed, stripped and brightened and now ready to stain again. I noticed very little fuzzing on some boards and questioning if this should be sanded. I’ve read that sanding pressure treated wood is contradicted. Your thoughts pls.?
You can go ahead and stain, it will be fine.

Good Day: I have a townhouse and had a fence installed for my backyard; it is only 400 sq feet. How much of your Wood Deck & Fences would I need? Also with the company that built my fence suggested ry 3 years I stain my fence and start with clear, then natural, golden, cedar, etc… My backyard gets a lot sun – in the summer from 0700 – 7/8 p.m. therefore, I want to make sure I purchase the correct color/stain. Thanks for your help.
3-4 gallons should cover this. Do not start with a clear, go straight to a tinted color. Any color you like will work.
Me again. I’ve cleaned my deck with Bob Villa’s Oxy/water/dishwashing liquid. Half the deck is in shade and its had three years to build up some mildew. I’d say maybe 40% of it came off in the cleaning. Thats after some good scrubbing. I have my AC Driftwood stain ready to go but worried that it will affect adherence/colour. Should I sand it down (ugh!) or move forward? Or do you have some secret technique before staining.

I had front door stairs built last year (made with tigerwood) in November. It was too wet and cold to apply any protection then. I just learned about your product and want to make sure I buy the right color. I was told it came in a clear, but do not see that color option with the Armstrong Clark Hardwood/Ipe Stain 1 Gallon. Can you please advise what color option is best for tigerwood? Also, should stairs be washed before applying stain?
AC stains do not come in Clear and it has 3 colors that are to be used for hardwoods like your Tigerwood. Amber, Mahogany, or Black Walnut. Many use the Amber color.

Hello. I am refinishing my deck and have a bench/railing that I want to stain as well as the deck. I read in your how to and information guide that the stain may rub off on people’s socks. So, I’m wondering if it’s advisable to stain the bench/railing, seeing that people will be sitting on it. Please advise. Thank you very much!
Yes, just do not over-apply the stain and do not use the semi-solid colors. The transparent and semi-transparent colors are okay.
Thank you! One other question, if I may. When sanding the deck, do I need to remove all traces of the previous Cabot stain? Or is it better to use a stripper? Thank you.
Stripping is better for prep as it leaves the wood more porous.

No. All AC stains are true oil-based stains with mineral spirits clean up. Takes about 2-4 business days to arrive in PA.
Have not used your product before, so don’t know the details for new construction prep. Using semi-stain, do exterior facia and siding have to be sanded prior to spraying?

I just purchased 2-5 gallon containers of Amber stain after receiving a reply to my question about timing of staining in Northwest Illinois. Your answer was I could apply the stain as long as the temperature was above 50 degrees. Since receiving the stain, the weather has not cooperated and we are getting a lot of rain and are starting to lose our temperatures. Can the stain be applied if the daytime temperature is over 50 degrees even if the nighttime temperatures fall into the 40’s? If I can, how long would I expect it to take to dry? Secondly, I am hoping for a period of Indian Summer but if we don’t get it, will the stain go bad if I store it in a temperature controlled area over the winter and try to use it the beginning of next summer?
It can fall below 50 at night but it cannot drop below freezing. It will be fine as long as it is not opened and stored correctly.

I have the Semi-transparent Driftwood for my cedar deck. I would like to see more grain and yet have some UV protection. Is it ok for me to wipe the stain a few minutes after applying it?
No, you cannot back wipe it right away as you will remove the curing oils. You can if needed after 60 minutes.
